Student Art
Show 2008
The awards ceremony of the Eastern Shore
Art League’s eighth annual Student Art Show was held on
Friday, March 7th in the Conference Room of the
Shore Financial Corporation Headquarters in Onley, VA. Art
students from Arcadia, Chincoteague, Nandua and
Northampton High Schools participated in large numbers to
view the artistic creations of their peers. The students’
art teachers as well as members of the Art League and Shore
Bank officers were also in attendance. Flash bulbs flashed
as winning students stepped forward to receive their prizes.
There was an air of excitement and pride as all in
attendance moved around enjoying and viewing the outstanding
accomplishments of these young artists.

The judges for the Show were: Diana
Davis, a former president of the Art League and well
known watercolor painter; Ann Holland, an accomplished
artist who paints with oils; and Ron Hugo, who is a
nationally acclaimed nature photographer. All three judges
are members of the Eastern Shore Art League. President
Fred Dassler presented the awards and read out the comments
submitted by the judges which were the basis for their
selections. He congratulated the students on the high
quality of their work.
All of the participating students were
awarded green ribbons for having the caliber of work that
was up to the standards of a public show. Many of those who
did not win prizes entered work that showed real promise for
their future in art.
Students that won prizes received large
tote bags containing valuable art supplies. Many thanks to
the local sponsors of the show. Mary and Evan Clements of
Tom Thumb Workshops on Market Street in Onancock
contributed a large quantity of valuable art supplies. Dawn
White of “Dawn” women’s clothing on Main Street in Onley as
well as Herman Walker, attorney at law in Exmore and Shore
Bank also sponsored the show. Art suppliers Jack Richeson
and Cheap Joe’s also sponsored the show. Art League members
raised money for the show by donating their miniature
paintings for sale at the Blue Crow Art Gallery in Keller,
VA. Members also raised funds by creating and selling
Harborfest posters and auctioning original artwork at
Harborfest.
Susan McGuire, Vice President of the Art
League and Chairperson for the Student Art Show did a great
job coordinating and planning this show. Many Art League
members gave time and effort to make this show a success.
